Former Washington Capitals goalie released on kidnapping, assault charge

Former Washington Capitals goalie Semyon Varlamov was released from jail in Denver as he faces charges of kidnapping and beating his girlfriend.

Varlamov, who was traded from the Capitals in 2011, appeared in court Thursday and was allowed to travel with the Colorado Avalanche as the case works its way through the judicial system, according to the Associated Press.

Varlamov, 25, was also ordered to stay away from his girlfriend and not contact her.

According to a police report, Varlamov kicked and stomped his girlfriend on her chest, dragged around her home by her hair and threatened her.

In Russian, he told her that if this were Russia, he “would have beat her more,” the report states.

The woman suffered bruises on her chest and arms consistent with a physical attack, police said.

Varlamov was charged with second-degree kidnapping and third-degree assault.

“The Colorado Avalanche organization is aware of the allegations concerning Semyon Varlamov,” according to a statement from the organization. “At this time, and until the conclusion of this investigation, the Avalanche organization will have no further comment on this situation.”
