Man charged in fatal car crash near Arlington Memorial Bridge

Arlington Memorial Bridge

A 24-year-old man was charged with negligent homicide in the driving death of a woman at the Arlington Memorial Circle.

U.S. Park Police initially said 36-year-old Katherine Jane Brannon Rahim, of Reston, was the driver of a Mercedes Benz sedan that lost control on the Virginia side of the Arlington Memorial Bridge on a rainy night in October.

But after further investigation, police said, the actual driver was Carlos Joel Alonso, of Maryland. He was found several hours after the crash at Columbia Island Marina. His clothes were wet, had had blood on his face and hands.

Alonso told police that he thought he had been in an accident with his girlfriend after drinking at a club in Dupont Circle, but he couldn’t remember what had happened, court papers said.

Investigators determined that the car was traveling between 55 and 60 mph, about twice the speed limit.

Police obtained a warrant for his arrest and he turned himself in to police Wednesday.
