Black ice blamed for crash that killed pedestrian, PG police say

A pedestrian was killed Monday morning after a car hit a patch of ice, lost control and crashed into the front of a storein Hyattsville, according to Prince George’s County Police.

Police have identified the pedestrian as 24-year-old Jose Martin Huaman of the 4900 block of 42nd Place in Hyattsville.

Police said a Ford minivan was traveling northbound on 4800 Rhode Island Avenue at aboat 7:30 a.m. when it hit a patch of ice. The driver, a 44-year-old woman, lost control of the vehicle, struck the median, crossed into the southbound lane, struck Huaman in the roadway, and crashed into the front of the store.

A Prince George’s County Police Department patrol officer provided CPR to the victim until paramedics arrived but unfortunately, the man later died at a hospital.


There have been no charges filed at this point. The collision remains under investigation.
