D.C. man indicted in crash that killed 4-year-old son

A D.C. man has been indicted on a charge of motor vehicle manslaughter and child abuse after a car crash which killed his 4-year-old son.

The Prince George’s County State’s Attorney said Wednesday that 33-year-old Charles Smith was driving on Bladensburg Road in Cottage City with his son and 7-year old stepdaughter on May 9.

As Smith’s SUV approached an intersection, he drove into the opposite lane to pass two vehicles waiting to turn left, prosecutors say. Smith’s SUV hit two vehicles, mounted the curb, struck two utility poles, a tree and a brick retaining wall.

Smith’s son, Charles Sullivan, was ejected from the SUV and died. Authorities say Smith’s left arm was nearly severed.

Smith was also charged with numerous driving infractions, including driving while impaired, reckless driving, and negligent driving.
