A 23-year-old D.C. man was charged with first-degree murder in a 2012 shooting death in Northwest Washington.

Bernard Fleming is the second suspect arrested in the slaying of 30-year-old Michael Edward Jones in the Shaw neighborhood.

Fleming was arrested Monday by D.C. homicide detectives on charges of first-degree murder while armed, assault with intent to kill and tampering with evidence.

According to police, on the the night of July 7, 2012, Jones was found dead from an apparent gunshot wound in the 1700 block of 7th Street NW. Another adult male was found suffering from a gunshot wound nearby at the corner of 7th Street and Rhode Island Avenue NW. The second victim was taken to a hospital and released.

According to charging documents, security cameras at the scene showed Jones walking up the block when another man, who is out of the site of the camera, begins to shoot at him. Jones begins to return fire and run up the sidewalk, but is shot and falls to the ground. Police recovered a .45 caliber Hi-Point firearm next to his body.

Shortly afterward, police arrested then-21-year-old Joseph Peoples on charges of second-degree murder in the shooting death of Jones. Both Peoples and Fleming were indicted on enhanced charges of pre-meditated first-degree murder.
