A longtime children’s music teacher was shot dead and another woman was wounded during a daytime shooting in a quiet Alexandria neighborhood, and police are still looking for the unidentified gunman.

It happened about 11:30 a.m. Thursday in the 2400 block of Ridge Road Drive.

Alexandria police said the gunman knocked on the door and shot the two women when they answered.

Police Chief Earl Cook said there was no indication yet that the victim’s knew their shooter, and investigators do not know what led to the shooting.

Fifty-nine-year-old Ruthanne Lodato, a music teacher, was taken to a hospital where she died from her injuries. The other victim, a caregiver, also was taken to a hospital and was expected to live. A third person was home but was not injured.

The suspect remains at large. He is described as a older white male, balding with a gray hair and a full beard.

Detectives are looking at whether there were any similarities between Thursday’s attack and the unsolved slaying of Ron Kirby, the longtime Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments who was found fatally shot inside his Alexandria home in November.

Cook urged residents to make sure they know the person knocking at their door before answering their doors.

“We’re concerned and the citizens should be concerned,” Cook said. “You hope that it can be safe on the other side of the door.”

Six area schools were placed on lockdown as a precaution, and all students and staff are safe, Alexandria Public Schools officials say. The lockdown was lifted shortly before 2 p.m.

Cook said he okayed the lifting of the lock-down after police searched the area for the gunman for several hours.

“You can’t be 100 percent, but it goes to reasonableness standards,” he said. “At some point we have to allow the parents to pick up their children.”

According to her LinkedIn page, Lodato was the music director of the Music Together Alexandria, which teaches music to children, ages infant through 5-year-olds and their parents.
