Alexandria leaders urged residents to remain calm but cautious a day after a popular children’s music teacher was gunned down at her front doorstep by an unidentified gunman who remains on the loose.

“Residents have a right to be concerned,” said Mayor William Euille, “but I don’t want to characterize it that there’s a serial killer floating around the city.

During a press conference Friday, police were unable to provide much new information about the shooting death of 59-year-old Ruthanne Lodato or her killer. A second victim at the home, a caregiver, remained hospitalized and was expected to survive.

Police say the suspect is an older white male, balding with gray hair, and a full beard. He was last seen wearing tan outerwear, possibly a jacket or work coat. Anyone with info is asked to call police at 703-746-6864.

Police Chief Earl Cook said there was no indication yet that the victims’ knew their shooter, and investigators do not have any motive. Police released a composite sketch of the killer later in the day.

The attack comes three months after another popular resident, Ron Kirby, the longtime Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments was found fatally shot inside his nearby home.

“As a lifelong resident, these things don’t happen here,” Euille said.

Police said they were looking to see if the shooting Thursday had any connection to Kirby’s killing or any other crimes.

State police were brought in to help with forensic evidence. Investigators remained looking for clues at the crime scene Friday afternoon, and were expected to finish up at the home Friday.
