Prince George’s County fire and rescue crews helped rescue a horse that became trapped in a barn by heavy snow Thursday.

The incident happened around 10 a.m., in the 9900 block of Old Ardwick-Ardmore Road in Springdale.

A horse, which had become sick and injured, had grown so exhausted from trying to free itself from the deep snow that the animal collapsed, according to Prince George’s County fire spokesman Mark Brady.

Firefighters assisted in accessing the horse and set up a rigging system to lift it up.  Apparently it is not good for a sick horse to be laying down for an extended period of time, Brady said.

A veterinarian went to the scene to treat the horse.
