Two arrested in shooting of 8-year-old girl in D.C.

D.C. police have arrested two people in the shooting of an eight-year-old girl in Southeast Washington.

Nineteen-year-old Karie Brown and 21-year-old Demtrius Nathanial Patten, both of Southeast Washington, were arrested and charged with assault with intent to kill.

The shooting happened shortly after 3 p.m., Friday, in an apartment complex in the 1200 block of Valley Avenue SE.

Authorities said the girl was shot in the upper body. D.C. Fire and Rescue Services said was conscious and breathing. She was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.

Family members told News4′s Darcy Spencer the girl, Makayla Darden, was walking from her aunt’s apartment building to her mother’s apartment building.
