Holocaust survivor fatally struck by school bus returning from White House

A 91-year-old Silver Spring man was killed Wednesday afternoon when he was struck by a school bus returning from a field trip to the White House.

According to Montgomery County Police, Elia Miranski was crossing Columbia Pike at Tech Road in Silver Spring about 2:30 p.m. He had crossed the southbound lanes and was continuing across the northbound lanes when he was struck by the bus contracted by Howard County Public Schools. Miranski was using a walker.Montgomery County police badge

About a dozen students from Hammond Middle School in Laurel were aboard the bus, but none of them were hurt, according to the officials of the Howard County school. Members of the School Girls Unite were returning from a trip to the White House.

Miranski was a Holocaust survivor from Poland, who escaped during the German invasion in 1939, according to an oral history he gave last year to the U.S. Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C.

In the two part interview, translated by his daughter Genia Miranski, Miranski described the brutalities of the war, and how he lost his parents and two younger siblings within days of the occupation. He and his brother escaped from a ghetto which had been set up in a castle, and joined Russian partisans against the Germans.

After the war, Miranski returned to Mir, Poland, where he worked on a dairy farm and became a house painter. He moved to Israel in 1972, then to the United States in 1995.
