Three people were shot after a police chase that started in Maryland and ended up in the District of Columbia early Saturday.

According to the U.S. Park Police, at around 2:30 a.m., a patrol officer spotted a black Jeep matching a description of one involved in an armed car-jacking that occurred in Chevy Chase. The vehicle had five people in it and the officer requested back up.

When the officer tried to pull the vehicle over, the driver refused to stop, leading the officer on a chase into Washington. The pursuit ended when the fleeing vehicle crashed at Bladensburg Road just south of New York Avenue NE.

An officer attempted to make contact with the occupants inside the wrecked vehicle, and shots were fired, said Lt. Richard Butler, of the U.S. Park Police.

He did not know at this time how many people fired their weapons. A handgun was recovered from the vehicle.

Three of the people in the car suffered gunshot wounds. All five occupants were each transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

No officers were injured, and the investigation remains ongoing.
